why doing taiji make my knees pain?

23 July 2005 465 views 3 Comments

When i first start doing taiji, i remember there were some pain in my knees the next day. What are the possible causes?

3 possible reasons :

a)change in activity levels! many of us are coach potatos before we took up taiji so expect the knees to protest a bit :) such pain should not stay for long, so no worries .

b)Incorrect position of knee. This happens when your toes are point at 90° but yr knees are pointing at 45°. This caused unneccessary stress on the knees.

c)Low and incorrect stance. The kneecap should not be extended further than the toes. The trick is to stick out yr buttons and sit back rather than sit out. another option is to sit higher and adopt a higher stance ie narrower stance too :) more on stances later

More on stances later?? That sounds terrific. To me stance work is the basis of everything (plus clear enough for a slow learner like me to really dig into while trying to figure out dantian etc.) The great stances and footwork was what attracted me to Chen style, gave me some courage as it were, since the overall movements seemed so complicated. Now it turns out that the primary thing is the torso and the extremeties/limbs are secondary. No danger of running out of new things to learn with taijiquan! Anyway stance discussion very welcome. P.S. I developed knee pain for the first time in my life in my mid-40′s; cured it with “Combat Fitness” exercise from Matt Furey: his “Hindu Squats” really did the trick (though I took time off to heal a bit before starting these challenging exercises).
