If you are attending regular taiji classes with your instructor, good for you! Face to face instruction is the best way to learn. It also allows you to ask questions and clear your doubts. You can also see how your fellow classmates or seniors do their form and practise.
I know many of you do not have the luxury of attending regular class, so how do you learn? I can think of the following :
- find a park or practise ground and do it on your own
- read taiji books and gain more knowledge
- look at instructional VCDs/DVDs and try to follow the steps
- visit internet forums or discussion groups to gain knowledge
- attend weekend workshops if a taiji master comes to town
anything else? let me know.

U can never learn taichi I MEAN REAL TAICHI from book ,dvd vcd vedeo or
whatsoever, u need a teacher to guide & correct u
hehe, I strongly agree on this, I have tried to learn on my own before my teacher teach me the step by watching video ahead of time, it turn out worst, because my teacher have to correct me 100% and he says it is easier to teach me from fresh then to change my bad steps. But if you have strong background in that style, maybe you can pick up the short form from video.
I actually believe that someone can learn via video and books and personal practice given they’ve received an adequate foundational training and corrections. For instance, I’m still working on incorporating the principles and corrections I received from CXW at one of his silk reeeling seminars I attended over a year ago. Also, at times, I schedule private classes to get personal feedback and corrections and I work on those at home until I have a chance to schedule another private.
I don’t believe it’s possible to learn strictly from a book/video though.
