Sing a Song Kua
song kua .. song kua .. song kua…..
I bet you heard your teacher saying this over and over and beginners may have difficulties understand what is song kua. Literally speaking, it means to relax the hips or the area i.e. where the thigh bone meets the hip. Be aware of the crease between the thigh and hip and not straighten. Kind of hard to comprehend???
By achieving song kua, the body dynamics will be in place. Your will be able to stand a slower stance without bending the body forward. When sould you be in “song kua”? 100% of the time when the routine. The degree of song kua may varies but never in the routine should you be standing straight.
I believe standing pole excercise is the best way to make you able to “song kua”. more on the standing pole excercise the next time.

is song kua the same as kai kua or opening of the kua? there is good article on kua by chen zhonghua in the latest issue of the taiji magazine. have you read it?
standing pole is one way. other ways to augment include stretching the kua area such as lean lunges:

GU LIU XIN and MA HONG brieftly mentioned about this in their TAICHi
articles,forget where i read it.
nice graphic :p will work on lean lunges ..
no, i have not buy taichi magazine for a long long time.
i think kai kua is closely linked to “yuan dang ‘(rounded crotch). After you “song kua” you should force your knees outwards, that will help to “open” the kua”
gu liu xin in his TaijiQuan YanJiu (Taijiquan Research) mentioned about the requirements of the kua on page 44-47.
if i remember correctly the method ma hong reccommend is just to do low postures for the frames, which is what he is known for. that he wrote will help the kua opening and thus increase power.
just bought a book about erlu by gu liu xin. will have a look thru to search for the requirements on the kua
i leared that in old frame the weihged knee most of the time turn inward
to close the kua,and the other remains opened but can change when weigh
changed (no double-weighted).PLEASE COMMENT.
if it is the gongbu or the ban ma bu then both my kua is closed with knees slightly in. but it is also not completely closed….but when moving i think that at least one kua should be actively involved in the move at any one time. So that the upper and lower will be connected in the move.
as Izy says open kua links to rounded crotch (yuan dang or guo dang)
so when one loosening his kuo, must wrap the groin area to protect the groin areafor vital attack.
only the three of us here? others please come up just say HELLOOOOOOO
ha..the rest busy doing the routines and have no time to read blogs :p
anyway welcome and thanks for participating
this blog definitely has more traffic than the forum.
my understand of song kua,
The leg which you put your body weight, eg body weight sitting at right leg, then your right kua is definitly song. The tigh are is sung down. We hv to song the other side (left leg) of the kua.
Yuan dang is different from song kua. Yang style hv song kua but not yuan dang. Both knee must not in, face out in order to yuan dang.
