Fast or Slow?

Taijiquan is always perceived to be a slow moving excercise. While taijiquan is definitely slower than the external styles, how slow should it be? In Chen style, there is a mixture of fast and slow movements. The fast being the fajin stokes. Again almost every stroke can have faijin displayed if you want.

As a general guideline for a Beginner, you should do it as slow as you can. By doing so, it allows you to self check your postures, your stance and your weighing of your feet at every stage. Mentally it allows you to calm down. In the long term the slowness will be well coordinated movement and be like water flowing smoothly along a long river.

As you advanced, you can develop some fast movements. Usually we start with the “Yan Shou Gong Quan” , the execution of the punch is fast.
The turning of the body from one direction to another can be fast too eg Gao Tan Ma.

I complete a set of Old Frame Routine 1 usually within 10-12 mins. What about you?

    myself & most of my friends finish about 6-9 mins. as we follow the flow. if i do it alone 10-12. as we do the KING KONG PUNCH THE MORTAR cab be fast or slow accordingly to the practitioner’s own adjust, so it is the 1st fast
    movmnt.

    My teacher does it really slowly so i follow suit. But i suspect he purposely slow it down for the students to see his movements. He takes usually 20mins and there is almost even a pause at the end of each movement and and he said it is for the qi to get back to dantian before the next move continues.

    but by my standards 10-15mins is moderate speed. 15-20mins is considered slow and below 10mins is fast, which i do when i am hard pressed for time.

    Li DeYin book on the 36 sword form (i think is the competition form ) has good sections on the basic sword methods.

    I started with about 15 mins for old routine 1 set. Now I need about 22 mins to complete it. When follow Master Zhu practising, it takes about 17 mins.
    As long as it is a smooth flow etc, I dont think the timing is matter if do it slow. But I think finish it within 10 mins is quite fast.

    Personally, I complete the laojia yilu in about 15 mins. I think that’s a good amount of time. What’s crazy though is I have a friend who used to train with the Dong family in hawaii and they would sometimes do 40 minute sets! CRAZY!!

    try doing it continously for 5-6 sets… Master Zhu recommendation.. Does not method if it is 9-10 mins per set.. siong siong..
